$29.960bn loan: Buhari playing with our collective destiny, He should use recovered loot – Femi Falana

Femi Falana, human rights activist and the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has called on the federal government to drop its plan to borrow $29.960 billion to execute key projects across the country
The soft-spoken lawyer said the government would be putting the collective destiny of the younger generation in jeopardy should it go ahead with the controversial decision
The President recently asked the approval of the National Assembly to borrow the said loan from the World Bank.
Falana, while speaking at the 2016 annual general conference of Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Lagos on Saturday, urged the federal government to source for funds locally.
The lawyer, who is a former president of CDHR, said the government should use recovered loot and go after chronic debtors to fund its projects.
He said: “We hear that the federal government wants to borrow $29 billion to fund the economy, my advice is we do not need to do this at such a period in our economy.
“What about the millions of the recovered loots from those who stole our money, our money that are in the hands of those who decided to steal from the treasury?
“I have a report from Nigeria Extractive Transparency Initiative, NEITI which states that the oil companies and NNPC are owing the federal government a joint $20.2b.
“All these should be recovered and used for these projects instead of putting the destiny of the younger generation and those to come in jeopardy as a result of the huge national debt it will bring.”

Kano State House of Assembly approves 15 years for rapists, and life imprisonment for kidnappers

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed into law, a bill seeking for life imprisonment for kidnappers and 15 years sentence for rapists in the state.

Hon. Yussuf Attah, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, who read the Kidnapping, Abduction and Forced Labour Amendment Bill 2016 before the Assembly today Monday, October 31, said the committee of the whole Assembly passed the bill after considering the amendment.

"The law has been in existence since 1963, but did not provide serious punishment for kidnappers, therefore, we have to amend it to suit the current situation," said Attah.
According to the lawmaker representing Fagge Constituency, any person found guilty of kidnapping would face life imprisonment without an option of fine while anyone found guilty of rape or forced labour will be sentenced to 15 years without an option of fine.

Speaking with newsmen after the passage of the bill, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Salisu Riruwe, hailed the amendment as a welcome development.

"With the passage of this anti-kidnapping law, we are hoping that the rampant cases of kidnapping and abduction in some areas of the state will come to an end," Mr. Riruwe said

Lawmakers query 250k per sitting allowance of Sovereign Wealth Authority board members

It has been revealed that board members of Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Authority (SWA) are paid N250,000 per sitting. More interestingly, the board members sit four times in some days, totaling N1m sitting allowance per member. The multiple entries of four sittings in just one day were discovered during an investigative hearing by the lawmakers, while vetting the accounts of the authority.
According to Vanguard report, responding to the query, the Managing Director of SWA, Mr Uche Ubosi, said:
“It is the standard practice of sovereign wealth authorities world wide to pay sitting allowances to board members.’’ This however angered the lawmakers who declared that he should produce evidence of such payments where board members were paid as much as N1 million per day. They also queried the reason all the payment schedules were computer print outs and demanded for signed receipts and signed documents authorizing such payments.
The Chairman of PAC, Kingsley Chinda, in his ruling ordered that all relevant concrete documents, not photocopies, concerning the payments should be submitted to this committee within the next eight days.

We started infrastructural development afresh because chibuike Amaechi squandered Rivers funds- Governor Wike

The Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the administration started the process of infrastructural development afresh because the immediate past administration of Rotimi Amaechi squandered resources that accrued to the state under his eight years of misrule.

He said it was Amaechi’s eight years of misrule that made it impossible for the former governor to construct a road to the hometown of his political mentor , Chief Godspower Ake of the APC.

The governor also urged the people of Rivers State to rise up and pray to God to handle those working with outsiders to disrupt the political process and deny the Rivers people representation at the Senate.
Governor Wike spoke on Sunday during the 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the Omega Power Ministry in Port Harcourt and the Harvest Thanksgiving of Saint Luke Anglican Church , Rumuadaolu.
"Amaechi squandered the money of our people, using state resources to sponsor elections in other places. Because of the funds squandered by Amaechi, we are starting the development of statewide infrastructure afresh. For eight years, at a time that the state got approximately N20billion monthly, that administration failed to develop critical infrastructure," he said.
"G..U Ake was Amaechi’s political mentor. Yet for eight years, he denied his community the required access road. For us, we will continue to ensure the development of infrastructure in all communities of Rivers State , irrespective of the political leaning of the people ".
Speaking at the Omega Power Ministry , Governor Wike , Governor Wike said he has presented the political problem of the state before God, urging all Christians to pray fervently for the sustenance of the state .
"The same God who ensured that we overcame them in 2015, will answer our prayers"
The governor also commended the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry , Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere for his commitment to the welfare of the less privileged.

Don’t drag Muhammadu Buhari into judges’ arrest – Presidency

The Presidency has advised journalists and other Nigerians to stop linking President Muhammadu Buhari to the legal travails of some recently arrested Judges in the country.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said President Muhammadu Buhari would be the last person to authorise anybody to induce a Judge to pervert the course of justice.
Malam Shehu recalled that, despite his personal familiarity with some court Judges, the President had never used that familiarity to seek favours from them from 2003, 2007 and 2011 when he was challenging the fairness of the presidential election results during the periods in question.
The Senior Special Assistant also explained that, as a politician, Buhari had never once ever suggested to his lawyers to approach any Judge for assistance to win his cases. He said the President lives by this principle and has never deviated from it.
On the fate of the Judges facing corruption allegations, the Presidential Media Aide said the President doesn’t tell Courts how to do their jobs and that anybody accused of corruption is protected by law to defend their innocence
He also explained that the purpose of the law is to punish the guilty and acquit the innocent, noting that the law projects the rights for everyone.
Shehu stressed that the President doesn’t have any powers to force any court to convict anybody who is innocent, arguing that in a democratic society, that cannot happen without resistance by the people.
